Step Back in Time: Celebrate 175 Years of Fort Martin Scott!

Get ready for a history adventure and kick off spring break with this free event. Mark your calendars for March 8th and 9th, 2024, as Fredericksburg, Texas, celebrates the 175th anniversary of Fort Martin Scott. This iconic site, once the first U.S. Army outpost on the Texas frontier, will come alive with exciting events, immersive experiences, and a chance to connect with the rich past. March 8th at 4 p.m. and March 9th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Living history comes alive - here's what awaits you at the free Fort Martin Scott anniversary celebration:

Step Back in Time:

Get a taste of the frontier life during the living history reenactments. Witness captivating portrayals of soldiers, Texas Rangers, and settlers, bringing the fort's story to life. Interact with them, learn about their daily routines, and even participate in drills. Engage in interactive exhibits: Dive deeper into the fort's history through engaging exhibits showcasing artifacts, documents, and multimedia presentations. Discover the struggles and triumphs of those who lived and served here. Witness fascinating demonstrations of blacksmithing, musket firing, and other skills practiced at the fort in the 1800s. Smell the smoke, hear the clang, and get a feel for the past.

A Joyful Noise:

Beginning at 4 p.m., visit the reproduction officers' quarters, enlisted barracks & visitor center, sutler's store, blacksmith shop, and the original stone guard house at the far end of the parade ground to see the artifacts on display in those buildings. There will also be a reproduction of an 1850's Army field hospital from the Army Medical Museum at Fort Sam Houston set up near the location of the original hospital here at the fort. At 5 p.m., the Hermanssӧhne Gemischter Choir and the Arion Mӓnnerchor will begin singing German songs from the porch of the Visitor Center.

Family-Friendly Fun:

Kids' Activities: Keep the little ones entertained with historical scavenger hunts, craft stations, and interactive games that make learning about history fun.  Savor delicious treats and local fare while enjoying the festivities. Picnic on the grounds or grab a bite from the diverse food options available. Immerse yourself in the spirit of the era with live music performances featuring traditional tunes and storytelling through song.

Special Events:

Attend the Opening Ceremony. Kick off the celebration with a grand opening ceremony featuring dignitaries, speeches, and a glimpse of what's to come. Listen to renowned historians and experts share their insights on the fort's significance and its impact on the region.
