Overview

View 17 historic country schools in Gillespie County by car or bicycle along the self guided Gillespie County Country Schools Driving and Cycling Trails. The full 120 mile trail includes 17 historic country schools dating from 1847 to 1936. Many historic schools along the trail are featured on the National Register of Historic Places and recognized by the Country School Association of America. Driving times along routes vary from one hour in length to half a day. Built of log, native limestone or framed with wood and tin exteriors unique to the Texas Hill Country, many of the historic schools along the trail were one teacher schools teaching up to ten grades at a time. Today, these schools are available as rentals for weddings, reunions, groups and more. Pecan Creek School Open House

Built in 1916, Pecan Creek School is now 110 years old. Take a scenic drive to Fredericksburg and visit the school from 11am - 4pm during the annual open house on 5/2/26.

Step into the past and experience what education was like in simpler times. No iPads or computers here!

After a tour of the school, enjoy a house-smoked pulled pork sandwich plate with a variety of sides, dessert, and tea for a suggested donation of $10 (cash only). Proceeds support the maintenance of the historic school and pavilion.

The open house will also feature a visit from the Fredericksburg Vintage Car Club from 11am – 1pm. The Club is comprised of a wide array of vintage vehicles, from the Model A to vehicles from the 1970s and 80s.
