May is a gorgeous time of the year to visit Fredericksburg. With outdoor dining, downtown attractions, live music, and a weekly farmers market, there’s plenty of things to do in May. Be sure to take a look at the events calendar for seasonal happenings before you visit.

Wine & Dine on the Patio

Enjoy the different outdoor dining options in Fredericksburg. From Hill Country wineries with sprawling patios to downtown restaurants with open-air seating, there are plenty of places for al fresco drinking and eating.

At Hondo’s on Main, you can enjoy a self-serve experience either inside or on the outdoor patio, where you’ll find weekly live music. Choose from a selection of Texas BBQ, fried bar bites, and Tex-Mex dishes. Pair your items with a handcrafted margarita or craft beer from the full-service bar. If you’re in town for Cinco de Mayo, this is a great spot to celebrate with a spicy jalapeño margarita.

Meet up at Hill & Vine's turf patio, where there are plenty of tables and chairs for the entire group to enjoy wine, cocktails, and beer. Dine under the string lights on hearty Texas dishes like locally raised ribeye, Gulf snapper tacos, and chili citrus-brined pork chop. You can also grab a seat inside the modern, lodge-style dining room.

Fredericksburg is also home to many local wineries with beautiful views. One example is Becker Vineyards, which has been producing award-winning wines since 1992. The vineyard opened its Estate Tasting Room to the public in 1996, offering a variety of tasting experiences year-round, tours, events, and access to several spaces. Reservations can be made for different party sizes and tailored to the experience you're after. The vineyard is open seven days a week, with the exception of select holidays, and a second tasting room is also located on Main Street.

Enjoy Outdoor Activities: Hiking, Rock Climbing & More

Fredericksburg’s natural landscapes are a big reason why our town is so special, and May is an ideal time to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities.

Climb to the top of Enchanted Rock, a massive pink granite dome rising above Central Texas, where visitors can hike, backpack, camp, rock climb, picnic, birdwatch, study nature, geocache, and stargaze.

Wildseed Farms is a 200-acre wildflower farm and vineyard located approximately 10 minutes east of Fredericksburg. Said to be the largest working wildflower farm in the country, Wildseed is a serene outdoor sanctuary. There are walking trails, an on-site wine-tasting room, a beer garden, and a diverse plant nursery.

Back in town, Cross Mountain Park is a historic mountain made of limestone and marl, marked with a large cross at the summit. It’s a fantastic place for a short hike, especially at sunset, when the hills are aglow with golden light.

Explore Downtown

Shopping on Main Street is a must-do. There are over 150 shops and galleries here, offering everything from locally made home decor and handcrafted jewelry to vintage artwork and antiques. If you’re visiting over Mother’s Day weekend, check out mom-approved events and shopping options all over town to show her your appreciation.

Other popular May activities include the Fredericksburg Farmer’s Market, which runs every Thursday at Marktplatz. The market features farm-fresh produce, meats, cheese, flowers, and other goods from local farmers, ranchers, and wineries.
