Local BBQ Joint Makes Top 50 List

When Dan and Kayla Martin opened Cranky Frank’s Barbecue Company in 2003, it became an instant favorite with the locals who had been hankering for some great “que” in Fredericksburg.  And folks, let me guarantee you, this is serious barbecue. Over the years the word spread about Cranky Frank’s delicious, mouth-watering meats and sides, resulting in the place becoming a popular tourist destination too, despite its way-off-Main Street location. In their June, 2013 issue, Texas Monthly magazine named Cranky Frank’s as one of the Top 50 Destinations for great barbecue in Texas – and that’s quite a distinction in our huge state where Texans value the quality of barbecue, and are mighty picky in choosing their favorite BBQ joints.

Dan is an accomplished pit master with the real open pits to prove it. He smokes his meats low and slow over mesquite hardwood coals – no shortcuts here – to create incredibly tender cuts of meat, with the perfect red smoke ring. Cranky Frank’s offers brisket, chicken, sausage, pork roast, ribs (where the meat falls off the bone with a slight tug), and its signature chopped beef sandwiches. You can order plates and select from home-style sides, which Kayla prepares each morning, served buffet-style. And there’s a selection of favorite Texas ice cold longnecks to pair with the barbecue. You can dine inside in the cozy dining room, or on the picnic tables outside adjacent to the barbecue pits.

Perfect for summer picnics or family get-togethers, Cranky Frank’s also offers their meats by the pound, so you can pick up an assortment of meats and sides, right down to the pickles and sliced onions, to create your own barbecue dinner anywhere you wish.

Many people are curious about the name “Cranky Frank’s” which seems to have nothing to do with the names of the owners. Kayla told me that when they opened the restaurant, their son Frank, who was a year old at the time, seemed to always be cranky, hence the name.

Come early though, they’re open until 3:00 p.m., or until the meat runs out!
