Traditional German Christmas Market Planned for December 2-3 in Fredericksburg
With a nod to its German roots, Fredericksburg will kick-off the holiday season with St. Nikolausmarkt, sponsored by the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce, on December 2-3. St. Nikolausmarkt, which will be held at Fredericksburg’s Market Square, is patterned after the famous Christmas markets of Germany with holiday shopping, ethnic food and beverages, traditional entertainment and of course, a visit from St. Nikolaus himself.
The German tradition of St. Nikolaus has been widely-celebrated for many years in Fredericksburg. Historically, children would place their shoes outside the front door of their home and St. Nikolaus would check if they had been well-behaved and polite and reward them by filling their shoes with small gifts and treats. In the Hill Country, the tradition was often blended with that of the American Santa Claus, by the hanging of stockings, yet on the date of St. Nikolaus’ visit.
St. Nikolausmarkt will be open on Friday, December 2 from 2 -9 p.m. and on Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Additionally, the annual Chamber Christmas Parade, which passes the event’s venue on its route down Fredericksburg’s famously-wide Main Street, will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
Admission to the event on Friday is free, while tickets on Saturday are $5 for adults and free for children age 12 and younger. Adult admission is one dollar off on Saturday for individuals with active military ID and seniors age 65 and older.
New attractions to the festival include the addition of FritzHaus and ArtHaus, which are special areas dedicated to local retailers and local artists respectively. Other shopping will include approximately 40 juried arts and craft vendors, plus German clothing, food items and glühwein, a warm spiced red wine.
All of Fredericksburg will be decked-out beautifully for the season with tens of thousands of glittering lights along with traditional German decorations. On the same site as the festival, visitors can enjoy Fredericksburg’s Christmas Pyramid, which was built in Germany to the city’s specifications. The 5-tiered, rotating, wooden pyramid rises twenty-six feet with each tier decorated with a different theme. Fredericksburg is currently the only municipality in the United States to have an outdoor pyramid of this grand scale.
