Star Party at Enchanted Rock (Feb)
Feb 18 2018 to Feb 18 2018
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is designated as an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association. As a Dark Sky Park, we strive to protect our night skies and nocturnal environments. Through public events, we communicate the importance of dark skies to the general public and provide an example of what is possible. For this Star Party, the Hill Country Astronomers will be leading us, providing telescopes and astronomers. They will be taking us on a “Tour through Space,” starting by getting visitors oriented with the night sky and some bare eye stargazing/constellation viewing. A variety of telescopes will be set up viewing things deeper and deeper into space.
Visitors will check in at the office to obtain a park permit, information, and map. Parking will be in the “near rock” lots and visitors will walk to the lower lot, where the telescopes will be set up. We do suggest visitors use red lights, if possible, as regular flashlights/cell phone lights degrade night vision and make it difficult to view the stars. They should also dress for the weather. Everything is weather dependent. Clouds = no stars. We suggest visitors keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter for updates closer to the event.
7 to 9 pm. Entrance fee for the park is $7/adult (children 12 and under are free). Fee is waived with a Texas State Park Pass. There is no additional fee for the event and no reservations are needed. Visitors can and should arrive earlier than the start time, to allow them time to park and get to the Party location.
Address: 18 miles north on Ranch Road 965
